Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite schedules. In late September that genuinely matters.

Day one and day eight are both eaten by the airport. Here's how to get real hours out of them.

5:00 PM flight, worked backwards

  • 7:00 AMRampart walk in Galle Fort while it's cool and empty. Best photos of the trip.
  • 8:30 AMBreakfast, then the last of the Fort shops as they open.
  • 10:30 AMLeave Galle. Non-negotiable. Bags in the car the night before.
  • 1:30 PMAt CMB. Roughly 3 hrs on the expressway, plus buffer for rain.
  • 2:00 PMCheck-in opens for most carriers at T-3hrs. Duty free is decent for tea and gems.
Skip Colombo. A brunch stop needs a 7:30 AM departure from Galle and leaves no slack for a monsoon downpour or a puncture. Galle Fort has better shopping anyway. If she insists, the only safe version is Galle → Colombo by 11:00 AM, one-hour lunch, wheels up for the airport by 12:30 PM sharp.

Bridesmaid's addendum: one person holds the passports, one person holds the cash, one person holds the group chat together. Never the same person. Whoever is holding the phone at Coconut Tree Hill at 6:30 AM is a hero and gets first shower.
